While I appreciate the first steps of the new US administration to close secret prisons and detention camps, something about the executive orders strikes me as not quite right.
According to the article, the executive orders signed on Thursday by Obama,
[…] allow Mr. Obama to reinstate the C.I.A.’s detention and interrogation operations in the future, by presidential order, as some have argued would be appropriate if Osama bin Laden or another top-level leader of Al Qaeda were captured. (NYT)
In his Inaugural Address, Obama reminded us
[…] the God-given promise that all are equal. (NYT)
If all are equal, why must an option exist that allows to reinstate what was and would be an unequal treatment for some?
